Scripture
Deuteronomy 34 (ESV)
1 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the Lord showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, 3 the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4 Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.”
5 And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. 6 He buried him[a] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. 7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. 8 The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.
9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.
10 Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. 12 For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
Numbers 12:3 (ESV)
3 Now the man Moses was very meek [Praus], more than all people who were on the face of the earth.
Acts 7:22 (ESV)
22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
Questions
Moses died aged 120. Not bad. Like all great men his legacy endures to this day. He died, as God had told him he would, at the top of Mount Pisgah. That was a 4,500ft climb (not bad for a 120 year old!). That walk must have been quite remarkable. Knowing he was about to die, and knowing that Joshua was in place to lead the people he had been responsible for 40 years, Moses could walk free of responsibility for the first time in ages. Peace, rather than fear, must have been his overriding feeling. At the top, God showed Moses mercy, letting him survey all of the promised land that his beloved people would soon enter. That must have been a wonderful moment just before he was to go to his eternal rest. There is much to consider about Moses's life, and hopefully as part of this study, you have gained a deep insight into his character (good and bad) with lessons to take forward in your own life. Here are some final questions to help you articulate the key takeaways:
As we have seen, Moses had quite a temper. How is it then that he is the only person, outside of Jesus, in the entire bible to be described as praus?
What do the scriptures above say about Moses character?
Imagine it is your last day on earth (hopefully some way in the future). God brings you up to the top of the mountain and allows you to survey your legacy today and as it impacts the future. What would you like to see? What, character wise, do you need to become to see that legacy come to pass?
What did you learn about Moses that inspires you most?
